Calculating Training Compensation (“TC”)

All clubs affiliated to FIFA and registered on TMS are categorised (from 1 to 4) based on the club’s financial investment in training players. The training costs established on a confederation basis for each category of club, as well as the categorisation of clubs for each association are published on the FIFA website 👇🏾

You need to know the category of the new club in order to calculate the amount of TC due.

So how do we calculate TC using the information provided via the link above?

Let’s say Modou, a 19 year old footballer from Gambia has been transferred from a Category 4 club in Gambia to a Category 2 club in Portugal (UEFA), and this is where he signs his first professional contract. Modou’s training clubs in Gambia will be entitled to TC from the Portuguese club within 30 days of Modou being registered with the club.

Modou’s training clubs ⬇️

TClub A: 12-16yrs in Gambia

TClub B: 17-18yrs in Gambia

TC for years 12 to 15 are based on the training and education costs of category 4 clubs to ensure they are not set unreasonably high 👍🏽. To be fair it probably costs a lot less to develop players in that age bracket anyway!

From the link above you can see that a Category 2 UEFA club pays €60,000 per year in TC. And for the ages 12-15 (treated as Category 4) a UEFA club pays €10,000 per year in TC.

TClub A: Year of 12th birthday ➡️ €10,000 (Category 4)

TClub A: Year of 13th birthday ➡️ €10,000 (Category 4)

TClub A: Year of 14th birthday ➡️ €10,000 (Category 4)

TClub A: Year of 15th birthday ➡️ €10,000 (Category 4)

TClub A: Year of 16th birthday ➡️ €60,000

TClub B: Year of 17th birthday ➡️ €60,000

TClub B: Year of 18th birthday ➡️ €60,000

TClub A receives €100k

TClub B receives €120k

In the case of Modou’s subsequent transfers, TC will only be owed to the previous club for the time he was trained by that club. In other words, if his next move is to a Spanish club, only the Portuguese club (and not his training clubs) will be entitled to TC from the Spanish club. If he moves to an English club after that, only the Spanish club will be entitled to TC. The training clubs are only entitled to TC when he signed his first professional contract.

Please note that these calculations may need to be prorated if the player didn’t complete a full season with a club.

Oh yeah, another thing to note is that the principle of Training Compensation does not apply to the Women’s game 😢, but hopefully that will change in future because it costs money to train them up too🤞🏾🤷🏽‍♀️.

So this is the “theory” of Training Compensation, but how does it actually work (in practice) for a lot of African clubs? 🤔….
