Individual Match Bonuses

⚽️⚽️⚽️ Individual Match Bonuses ⚽️⚽️⚽️

I have had some interesting conversations recently about bonuses – “match goal bonuses”, “appearance fees”, “winning bonuses”, “qualification bonuses”, “promotion bonuses”, “bonuses that are promised, but not paid to African national teams” 😅 , etc.

A player I was representing a while back asked to be paid a bonus, by his new European club, for every goal he scored. The club was very clear and firm on its stance with regards to paying individual bonuses. Basically, bonuses were only paid as a team.

I thought that was a really cool idea actually. Yes, I understand that an individual bonus could motivate a striker, for instance, to score more goals, but on the flip side, it could make them more selfish.

Imagine offering a player £1,000 for every goal he scored. He could want that bonus so badly, that he would prefer to attempt shots at goal from difficult positions, even when there is a teammate in a better goal-scoring position. However, if the bonus is offered to the team as a whole to be shared amonsgst them, then the players are more likely to be selfless.

If more clubs did this, there would be more footballers playing for the team, and less playing for themselves.
